AOGS2026 Kamide Lecture Award
The Kamide Lecture Award is a distinguished lecture established by the Asia Oceania Geosciences Society (AOGS) to recognize early-career researchers who have made outstanding research contributions. Named in honor of Dr. Yohsuke Kamide, one of the founders of AOGS, the award recognizes selected early-career researchers across AOGS sections, including Atmospheric Sciences, Ocean Sciences, and Solid Earth Sciences, who deliver Distinguished Lectures at the AOGS Annual Meeting.
About awarded research
Dr. Minamide has pursued research integrating satellite observations, data assimilation, and atmospheric dynamics to better understand the predictability of tropical cyclones and severe convective systems and to improve their prediction.
In particular, he has developed data assimilation methods that enable the effective use of all-sky satellite radiance observations, including observations in cloudy regions that have traditionally been difficult to assimilate into numerical weather prediction systems. He has further applied these methods to investigate the dynamics and predictability of tropical cyclone rapid intensification and severe convective weather events. Using observations from the GOES-16 geostationary satellite, his research demonstrated improved prediction of the onset of tropical cyclone intensification and an approximately 20% reduction in intensity forecast errors near the time of peak intensity.
He was selected for the Kamide Lecture in recognition of this body of work, encompassing both methodological advances in all-sky satellite data assimilation and their extension to research on the dynamics and predictability of extreme weather.

I am deeply honored to receive this prestigious award. I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to my collaborators and everyone who has supported my research over the years.
My research has focused on all-sky satellite data assimilation. While the recent Space Development and Utilization Grand Prize recognized the potential of this work for operational and societal applications, I view the Kamide Lecture Award as recognition of its contribution to advancing atmospheric science and research on predictability.
I am greatly encouraged by this award and will continue to pursue new scientific questions, with the aim of contributing to a deeper understanding and improved prediction of extreme weather.
