SCEJ 90th Annual Meeting, Excellent Student Award

Among poster presentations by students, the research and presenters were comprehensively evaluated by industry, academia, and government judges, and were awarded to those who were in the top 12% of all the presenters.

About awarded research

In recent years, the demand for monoclonal antibodies (mAb) for the treatment of critical diseases, such as cancer, has been rapidly increasing. Cultivation processes in mAb production require complex processes, contributing to higher drug prices. In the presence of many design variables to be determined, simulations using mathematical models are useful for achieving appropriate process design without relying on empirical knowledge. However, existing models had limitations in quality attributes considered and the range of applicable cultivation conditions. Furthermore, they did not account for purification processes, posing challenges for practical application.

In this study, we developed a new hybrid model utilizing cultivation data and applied it to process design and operation support. The results are expected to contribute to a more efficient mAb production process without relying on trial-and-error experiments, and further to lower drug prices.

Your impression & future plan

With the huge guidance and support of Prof. Hirokazu Sugiyama, the laboratory members, and the collaborators at Chitose Laboratory, I was able to advance my research. I would like to further develop my research in the PhD program encouraged by this award.
