DICOMO 2025 Symposium, Best Paper Award
The DICOMO Symposium, organized by the Information Processing Society of Japan (IPSJ), is one of the largest domestic conferences in Japan focusing on networking, security, and distributed systems, with a history dating back to 1997. This award is presented to two exceptional papers selected from over 200 submissions presented at the symposium, recognizing those that make significant contributions to the advancement and dissemination of academic and technical knowledge.
About awarded research
We present a method for a wearable monocular camera to determine whether a subject is closer or farther than a set distance threshold by inserting a coded aperture into the lens. This approach aims to determine the distance to the subject by exploiting changes in the optical system's point spread function (PSF) with distance, without relying on dedicated sensors or machine learning. We developed a design policy for the coded aperture that accounts for factors such as image sensor size and lens properties, enabling high-precision depth determination even with compact cameras. Our evaluations showed that our approach can achieve an estimation accuracy of 83.8%, using small cameras.
Your impression & future plan
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all the faculty members who provided warm guidance during the writing of this paper, and to everyone in the lab who kindly helped me practice for my conference presentation. Thank you so much for giving me such a wonderful opportunity. I will leverage this experience, continue to focus on my research, and do my best to achieve even greater results.
