The Asahiko Taira International Scientific Ocean Drilling Research Prize

The American Geophysical Union (AGU) is the world's largest international society in the field of research on the Earth and space. The Asahiko Taira International Scientific Ocean Drilling Research Prize is awarded by the AGU to researchers who have demonstrated outstanding research achievements in ocean drilling research.

About awarded research

Prof. Tsuji has participated in multiple ocean drilling research expeditions and utilized drilling data to conduct research on seismic faults, fluid behavior beneath the seafloor, and hydrothermal ore deposits. For example, during the two-month ocean drilling expedition of the Juan de Fuca Plate off the coast of Canada in 2010, he served as the co-chief scientist, leading an international research group and monitoring fluid behavior within the oceanic crust. He has also been involved in drilling projects related to the tsunamigenic fault of the Nankai Trough, conducting assessments of fault instability. These achievements were recognized, leading to his receiving the award this time.

Your impression & future plan

In the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP), I joined ~2 months ocean drilling expeditions. The experience of focusing on my own research for two months in the international atmosphere on board was invaluable. While I often engage in field surveys such as installing seismometers, not only on drilling ships, I hope that students and researchers can also have the opportunity to have such experiences. Of course, I myself also wish to continue these endeavors.
