Sharing the excitement and possibilities of engineering with the next generation is an invaluable opportunity for us to reflect on our approach to engineering education.
On August 3 and 4, we held our online Open Campus for high school students. Total registration across the university reached 11,083—far exceeding last year’s figures—with a great number of participants joining the School of Engineering programs. I had the opportunity to speak about our school, while many of our faculty members delivered mock lectures showcasing their specialized fields.
Engineering encompasses a rich diversity of disciplines, making its appeal difficult to summarize in a single phrase. However, one key message I wished to convey to these students is that engineering is a discipline that shapes the future.
University education is about more than acquiring established knowledge and skills. It is about identifying new questions, confronting unsolved challenges, and pioneering new possibilities through trial and error. Through this process, students develop the capacity to shape the future. In an era of rapid technological and societal change, providing opportunities to tackle such meaningful challenges is more important than ever.
□ At the Forefront
During this year’s Open Campus, faculty from across our diverse fields communicated the appeal of engineering from their unique perspectives, including through an omnibus lecture titled “What is Engineering?”
Events like this do more than simply introduce engineering to prospective students. For all of us, they serve as a meaningful moment to reflect on what possibilities our research and education can offer to the next generation.
We do not need a single, rigid definition for the diversity of engineering. Expressing its appeal from our individual domains and offering multiple entry points into the field is part of what makes education at the School of Engineering so rich.
□ A Call for Dialogue
Our daily interactions and research mentorship with students are equally vital opportunities to convey the power of engineering to the next generation.
As the School of Engineering, we remain committed to working alongside all of you to foster an environment where every student can discover their potential and rise to the challenge of shaping the future.
