□ Monthly Message
In my previous message, I reflected on the strengths of our School of Engineering, highlighting the diverse research foundations that define our community. This month, I would like to consider how we can build upon those strengths to create new value.
Research challenges today are becoming increasingly complex, and many can no longer be addressed within the boundaries of a single discipline. From achieving carbon neutrality and building sustainable cities to advancing healthcare and integrating AI into society, the issues we face require insights from multiple fields.
Against this backdrop, interdisciplinary and boundary-crossing research has become more important than ever. New ideas and breakthroughs increasingly emerge at the intersections of disciplines.
Our School of Engineering brings together a rich diversity of expertise and outstanding researchers. This is one of our greatest strengths in fostering interdisciplinary collaboration. At the same time, meaningful collaboration cannot be achieved through institutional frameworks alone. It begins with understanding one another's research, identifying shared interests, and discovering common challenges.
□ At the Forefront
With this perspective in mind, our School is strengthening efforts to communicate research achievements and faculty activities both within and beyond the University. In addition to enhancing our international outreach, we are resuming research spotlights featuring early-career researchers to make the breadth and diversity of our research activities more visible.
Research communication is not simply a matter of public relations or accountability to society. It also provides an essential foundation for researchers to learn about one another's work, creating opportunities for new collaborations and joint research.
In today's rapidly changing environment, universities—including those aspiring to become Universities for International Research Excellence—are expected not only to demonstrate research excellence, but also to promote interdisciplinary collaboration, international engagement, and meaningful connections with society. As a School, we hope to foster an environment in which diverse expertise can come together to generate new value.
