About awarded research
"Validation Study on FELMI for a Gas-Liquid-Solid Flow"
Real-scale numerical simulation for complex three-phase flow, such as the sloshing motion occurred during a Core Disruptive Accident (CDA) of the Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor (SFR), is still impractical as such simulation are extremely computational demanding due to high number of particles needed. In the present study, a new methodology, namely the Coarse-Grained Discrete Element Method (DEM) coupled with the Volume of Fluid method (VOF) and the Refined Grid model, was employed to effectively reduce the required computational resource for three-phase flow and to solve the problem that the CFD grid cannot be set flexibly. The feasibility of the proposed methodology was examined through numerical examples. Results obtained by the proposed methodology showed quantitative agreement with those obtained by the original system. Besides, when the proposed methodology was adopted, the time for DEM computation was drastically reduced. The development of this method has contributed to the advancement of computational science in nuclear engineering.

Your impression & future plan
It is my great honor to win this award. I would like to express my sincerest gratitude to the co-authors of the present research, Professor Sakai and Dr. Yamada. Also, I would like to say thank you to my lab members, especially Dr. Duan, Dr. Li and Miss Shi for their help. In the future, I will work harder to achieve more.
