International Applicants
1. Special English Graduate Programs
The Graduate School of Engineering has Special English Graduate Programs for international students built around an English-as-a-global-language academic environment to provide education to promising, qualified students from all around the world. Admitted students through Special English Graduate Programs directly enter the Master's or Doctoral program at the Graduate School of Engineering. The Graduate School of Engineering will recommend several select students who demonstrate outstanding merit to scholarship sponsors including the MEXT (Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports and Technology) Scholarship.

Primary eligibility requirements
Applicants for Special English Graduate Programs must satisfy all of the following primary eligibility requirements:
・A person who neither has Japanese nationality nor resides in Japan during the period of time from
the online application’s start date until its deadline, and
・A person with the linguistic skill level required to take classes and receive research guidance in English.
In addition to these primary eligibility requirements, there are other requirements for applicants, regarding eligibility, documents for submission, admission procedures, etc. Please read all of the “Application Guidelines for All Special English Graduate Programs” below.

Applicants should apply through the online application system T-cens and receive a primary evaluation based on academic qualification. *
*Not applicable for applicants for International Graduate Program in Chemistry and Biotechnology.

Important Notes for Online Application
Type your own e-mail address that can be used securely before, during and after your online application through T-cens. You will then receive a system e-mail to access the T-cens online application page. Please note system e-mails may sometimes be sent directly to your spam/junk mail.

Application documents must be submitted both online and by post.
Create your T-cens application account before 15:00 JST on the deadline date.
Data entry and document uploading must be completed online by 15:00 JST on the deadline date. We will NOT accept any applications submitted after the deadline under any circumstances.
You will be given your own T-cens application number which will be used for the rest of the application process.

2. MEXT scholarship application through Japanese Embassy
This is a graduate program fully conducted in English, aided by the Japanese government-sponsored MEXT (Japanese Ministry of Education Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) Scholarship. This application has two steps:
Step 1: Applicants will take the preliminary selection in the Japanese Embassy in their own home countries.
Step 2: After passing the preliminary selection by the embassy, the applicants will be further evaluated by School of Engineering, the University of Tokyo for acceptance.
You will need to submit these application documents for final judgment of your acceptance. Please refer to the following URL:

1) In this program, students generally enroll as Postgraduate International Research Students (Non-degree) and they must take the entrance examination to be admitted to a Master’s or Doctoral program.
2) Applicants for the Department of Civil Engineering should directly apply for Master’s or Doctoral courses (See the list of the courses of Special English Graduate Programs above.)

*Once you have cleared screening by The University of Tokyo Security Export Control, you will receive the “Admission Notice for Successful Applicants” from the admission desk of each individual program.
