Global Leaders from Major Centers in Space Resource Development to Convene at UTokyo for Space Resources Initiative II

2025/11/21

The University of Tokyo will host the Space Resources Initiative II (SRI II) on November 23 and 24, 2025 at HASEKO-KUMA HALL, as part of its efforts across the university led by the Center for Space Resources and Innovation (CSRI) and the Graduate School of Engineering. SRI-II will bring together the heads of the world’s leading centers in space resource development, including: Prof. Angel Abbud-Madrid (Director of the Center for Space Resources, Colorado School of Mines), Associate Prof. John Culton (Director of the Andy Thomas Centre for Space Resources, University of Adelaide), and Kathryn Hadler (Director of ESRIC in Luxembourg).

Such a concentration of global leadership is rare and underscores the growing importance of international collaboration in this field. Major industry players will also join the event, including ispace (CEO Takeshi Hakamada), Karman+ (Co Founder Daynan Crull), and Interstellar Technologies (IST; COO Keishi Atsuta), reflecting the rapidly expanding role of commercial actors in future lunar and asteroid resource missions.

The event will open with remarks by Prof. Tetsuya Ishida, Vice Dean of the Graduate School of Engineering, followed by Prof. Hirdy Miyamoto, CSRI Center Director, who will outline UTokyo’s vision for space resources research.

Across two days, discussions will cover scientific and technological advances, international partnerships, the emerging off-Earth economy, and legal and policy frameworks. A key focus will be the exploration of a future Global Alliance among the major centers, marking an important step toward deeper global cooperation.
