IMWUT Distinguished Paper Award

IMWUT Distinguished Paper Award, which is an award for eight most distinguished papers out of 205 papers in IMWUT 2024.

About awarded research

Name of the paper: "DIPA2: An Image Dataset with Cross-cultural Privacy Perception Annotations".
This research built an open-source dataset "DIPA2", which provides a comprehensive understanding of privacy-threatening content in images. DIPA2 provides 5,897 annotations describing the perceived privacy risks of 3,347 objects in 1,304 images. Each privacy threat annotated in the dataset contains the type of objects and extra privacy metrics, indicating the type of privacy content, severity level, and corresponding sharing intentions. The dataset was annotated by 300 Japanese and 300 British, emphasizing how cultural backgrounds impacted the perception of privacy. Overall, DIPA2 facilitates various types of research on image privacy and multidisciplinary research related to cultural influences.

Your impression & future plan

I am very delighted to know that this work has been awarded. Our team spent almost two years executing this project to obtain quantitative understandings of privacy among different cultures as a form of datasets, and I am very glad that our effort paid off. I keep working hard to conduct further research on using AI to help people protect privacy better, therefore ultimately building up a risk-free online sharing environment.
