Collaboration with Industries

We combine the intellectual resources of the University of Tokyo with the technological capabilities, funding, and practical expertise of industry to address societal challenges and create new industries.

Research Process

1. Consultation

If you are looking for researchers related to specific topics such as the technical evaluation of a business idea, please feel free to contact the relevant department faculty or Corporate & External Relations Planning Office.
Even if you have already started discussions with a researcher regarding specific research content, you are welcome to consult the Office regarding the preparation of contractual documents, etc.

2. Coordination

Meetings will be held with the researcher to concretely define the scope and details of the collaborative research.

3. Proposal

Adjustments will be made to the research plan and contract terms as necessary.

Types of Research Agreements

Collaborative Research

This is research conducted jointly by researchers from private companies or other external institutions and faculty members of the University on topics of mutual interest and on an equal footing.
In most cases, collaborative research is conducted within the University with funding and/or the assignment of researchers from the external partner. However, alternative formats are also possible, such as joint research involving university faculty visits to the partner institution or shared responsibility research conducted at both institutions.
If you plan to assign a collaborative researcher to the University, the research fee is JPY 550,000 per person per year. While we do not prorate monthly, a reduced rate of JPY 275,000 may be available for periods of six months or less. Please consult with us for details.

Entrusted Research

This refers to research conducted by University faculty as commissioned work based on a request from a private company or other entity. The research results are reported back to the commissioning party.

Promoting Academia–Industry–Government Collaboration

The Graduate School of Engineering at the University of Tokyo actively promotes over 500 collaborative and commissioned research projects each year. These efforts aim to produce outstanding research outcomes through partnerships with private and public organizations and to return the results to society.

Since its inception, the Graduate School of Engineering at the University of Tokyo has actively pursued collaboration and partnerships with society and industry. Going forward, we will further promote strategic and agile collaboration and co-creation with external partners.
To support this mission, the Office of Social Collaboration and Industry-Academia Partnership was established on March 1, 2017.

The Office aims to foster academic advancement through strong collaboration with society and industry by strategically and flexibly promoting social collaboration and industry-academia partnerships. This is achieved through the effective integration of both human and facility-based academic resources within and outside the University.

To this end, the Office is staffed with dedicated professors and expert research management professionals known as University Research Administrators (URAs). The Office is responsible for a wide range of initiatives and planning efforts, including public outreach and dissemination of research achievements, developing systems to respond swiftly to the needs of industry, and organizing workshops to explore the latest trends across various research fields.
