On 29th July 2019,  Yuki Mori(D1), Department of Nuclear Engineering and Management, won the best poster award at 8th International Conference on Discrete Element Methods.
It was given for the superior presentation at the student poster session at this symposium.

Title: Large-scale DEM-CFD method for a gas-solid flow in pharmaceutical engineering

Gas-solid flow is often encountered in pharmaceutical engineering systems. To understand the phenomena of gas-solid flow, not only experiments, but also numerical simulations are often performed. DEM-CFD method, one of the numerical simulation methods for gas-solid flows, is often used. Although this method is well established, it has a problem of calculational difficulty when we apply this method to large-scale pharmaceutical systems because these systems have an enormous number of particles and complex wall boundary. To overcome these difficulties, we developed an integrated-DEM-CFD method, which combines the coarse graining model and advanced DEM-CFD method. The coarse graining model enabled us to calculate large-scale systems by using coarse grain particles which represent a crowd of particles, and the advanced DEM-CFD method can calculate the effect of the arbitrarily shaped wall by using the structured grid. In this study, we performed validation tests of numerical simulation method in powder flow into a confined space.
