Abstract:
The huge and multifaceted impact of COVID-19 has highlighted the fragility of the aging society. At the same time, it is notable that COVID-19 has opened new opportunities and possibilities in some fields of our society. In academia, new research idea and collaborative activities have been born in a year. In order to make this crisis into a step to opportunity, more collaborative works with broader knowledge is required.
Since April 2020, Institute of Gerontology at the University of Tokyo has started its second phase as a collaborative research organization with 9 graduate schools and 2 research centers. The institute takes over the first 10 years of multidisciplinary activities of IOG and expand its effort with the emphasis on action research to tackle the issues with communities, municipalities, and industries.
In this symposium, presenters and panelists will discuss how COVID-19 has impacted the lives of older people and the society, and how the gerontological knowledge and activities have tackled the issues. Through the symposium, participants will gain insights about the roles of collaborative actions with private sectors, government, communities, and academia, to overcome the pandemic, and will envision the future of the super-aged society.
