HASEKO-KUMA HALL Academic Seminar #001 Biblio Series celebrates the publication of the book The University of Tokyo as a History of Thoughts:

 

 

 

The Evolution of Japan's Modern Knowledge edited by YOSHIMI Shunya and MORIMOTO Sachiko. The online seminar brings together presentations by scholars reflecting on the accomplishments of The University of Tokyo’s past scholars and educators, including YAMAKAWA Kenjiro, Henry Dyer, HIRAGA Yuzuru, and UCHIDA Yoshikazu highlighted in the book for their scholarly contributions and inspiring work.

The book consists of a comprehensive study of the history of The University of Tokyo. It provides an insight into the challenges the university experienced between the mandate to modernize by incorporating Western knowledge and scholarship into the curricula while maintaining Japanese traditions and excellence in multiple fields, including medicine, engineering, sociology, politics, and economics. The thirteen chapters of the book celebrate the founders’ accomplishments and institutional commitment. It also traces the significant contributions of the School [or College] of Engineering, established in 1878, to the transformation of the university and modernization of higher education and scholarship in Japan.
