47th JSAP Outstanding Paper Award (JSAP Young Scientist Award)

This award is presented to outstanding young researchers who are expected to contribute significantly to the progress and advancement of applied physics. It is granted to the first author of exceptional papers published in the Japanese Journal of Applied Physics (JJAP) or Applied Physics Express (APEX).

About awarded research

Awarded Paper
Yuto Miyatake, Kasidit Toprasertpong, Shinichi Takagi and Mitsuru Takenaka, “Compact, low-loss, and broadband 2 × 2 Si optical coupler designed by covariance matrix adaptation evolution strategy,” Jpn. J. Appl. Phys. 63 (2024) 12SP16.
Reason for Award
The originality of this research lies in the world's first introduction of a novel design methodology for 2 × 2 couplers—an indispensable component in silicon photonics—by applying the Covariance Matrix Adaptation Evolution Strategy (CMA-ES). CMA-ES is an advanced optimization technique. Its implementation enabled the achievement of a minimum insertion loss of less than 0.02 dB and an operating bandwidth exceeding 130 nm. These results significantly surpass the performance of existing devices and represent a major contribution toward the practical realization of photonic integrated circuits. Furthermore, the proposed methodology is device-independent and can be extended to the design of various other passive components, promising broad applications beyond silicon photonics. Overall, this research is an outstanding achievement that combines originality, scalability, and practicality, and is expected to have a profound impact on the future of the photonics field. Consequently, this paper is highly deserving of the JSAP Young Scientist Award for the Presentation of an Excellent Paper.
