About awarded research
This study analyzes the global shipping network of vehicle carriers using Automatic Identification System (AIS) data. The significance and connectivity of ports are evaluated through network theory metrics from two analytical perspectives: time-period models to examine the temporal evolution of the network, and company-specific models to capture distinct structural patterns among major shipping operators. Furthermore, port efficiency is analyzed to reveal how shipping companies utilize ports and to identify those that handle vessel calls most efficiently. The findings provide a comprehensive understanding of the global vehicle carrier transport network, highlighting the key hubs that support its efficiency and connectivity, as well as clarifying how the network evolves and differs among shipping companies.
