On 29 May 2023, the City of Imabari, Ehime Prefecture, the University of Tokyo's School of Engineering, and IBM Japan, Ltd. announced the signing of a cooperation agreement on the "Shimanami Learning and Exchange Place" project, where technology and clinical knowledge are studied together on Omishima Island on the Shimanami Sea Route.
