Event Report: 1st Graduate School of Engineering and Research Workshop on Strengthening Research Capabilities.
On November 20, 2014, the first Graduate School of Engineering and Research Workshop on Strengthening Research Capabilities was held from 5:30 PM to 7:15 PM in the faculty meeting room of Engineering Building number 8.
Dean Mitsuishi of the Graduate School of Engineering began the event with an opening address in which he stated, “the University of Tokyo’s value lies in carrying out high level research, drawing in talented students, and never being satisfied with the present state of affairs. This workshop is an opportunity to jump-start progress toward higher levels of research.”
Following the introduction, there was an overview by Professor Takahashi, Senior Advisor for the Office of Academic Strategy. The event continued with a presentation by Dr. Masashi Shimada, Deputy Director of the Office of Academic Strategy, entitled “Improving the University of Tokyo’s Research Analyses and Research Skills.” Next was “The Status of Cooperative Dialogues with Businesses” by Professor Takashi Kato, Representative Director of the Office of Academic Strategy. This was followed by an introduction of good comprehensive research practices with regard to biotechnologies and systems creation by Professor Tatsuya Okubo, Vice Dean and Director of the Office of Academic Strategy, in a presentation called “The Status of Industry-Academia Cooperative Efforts.” The final presentation was from Professor Ted Oyama of the Chemical Systems department and was entitled “Recommendations for Strengthening Research Capabilities.” The event finished with a closing address from Senior Researcher Sunao Ishihara from the Office of Academic Strategy, who stated, “we cannot become stronger autonomously. We should move forward in synergy.”
