The authors have developed a numerical method called the Flexible Euler-Lagrange Method with an Implicit algorithm (FELMI). The DEM-CFD method is widely used for numerical analysis of gas-solid flows, where the solid phase is calculated by the discrete element method (DEM) and the fluid phase is calculated by computational fluid dynamics (CFD). In our laboratory, we have developed the SDF/IBM wall model in which the wall surface is modeled by the signed distance function (SDF) and the immersed boundary method (IBM). The SDF/IBM wall model enables us to efficient analysis of gas-solid flows with arbitrarily shaped walls. In addition, the authors developed an implicit method for the fluid drag force, which enables us to simulate the coupled solid-fluid problem stably and accurately even in the system where stable analysis is impossible due to computational instability by conventional numerical methods. Finally, by combining these methods, we developed the FELMI, which can stably and accurately simulate systems with arbitrarily shaped walls.
In this study, we applied the FELMI to a fluidized bed with inserted tubes and performed validation tests. The results of numerical analysis and experiments were compared, and it was found that the qualitative behaviors of the bubbles and powder bed, and the quantitative values such as pressure drop agreed well between the experiments and the numerical analysis. The results showed that the FELMI can accurately simulate a system with arbitrarily shaped walls.
