1886 March Teikoku Daigaku ( Imperial University ) established. Kobu Daigakko merged with the Faculty of Technology, University of Tokyo , to form the Technical College (later named the Faculty of Engineering, Toranomon) with seven engineering departments: Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Naval Architecture, Electrical Engineering, Construction, Applied Chemistry, and Mining and Metallurgy.
1887 September Departments of Technology of Explosives and Technology of Arms added.
1889 July Facilities of the Technical College moved from Toranomon to a new establishment in Hongo.
1893 September New chair system introduced.
1897 June Imperial University renamed Tokyo Imperial University .
1898 September Construction Department renamed Architecture Department.
1909 April Mining and Metallurgy Department was split into Mining Department and Metallurgy Department.
1917 September Naval Architecture Department renamed Marine Engineering Department.
1919 February Technical College became Faculty of Engineering.
1920 September Department of Aeronautics established.
1921 April Mining ("Saiko") Department renamed Mining ("Kozan") Department.
1925 April Mining Department and Metallurgy Department merged into the Mining and Metallurgy Department.
1939 October Engineering Research Institute established.
1942 April Facilities in Hongo renamed First Faculty of Engineering. Department of Petroleum established. Second Faculty of Engineering established in the City of Chiba . Comprised Departments of Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Naval Architecture, Aircraft, Aircraft Engine, Technology of Arms, Electrical Engineering, Architecture, Applied Chemistry, and Metallurgy.
1945 June Department of Technical Measurement added to the First Faculty of Engineering.
1945 December Aircraft Department and Aircraft Engine Department of the Second Faculty of Department renamed Physics Engineering Department and Internal Combustion Engine Department, respectively.
1946 January Department of Aeronautics, and Technology of Explosives Department of the First Faculty of Engineering discontinued. Department of Applied Mathematics established.
1946 March Technology of Arms Department of the First Faculty of Engineering renamed Precision Machinery Department.
1946 March Technology of Arms Department of the Second Faculty of Engineering renamed Precision Engineering Department.
1946 September Internal Combustion Engine Department of the Second Faculty of Engineering discontinued.
1947 April Precision Machinery Department of the First Faculty of Engineering renamed Precision Engineering Department. Mining and Metallurgy Department of the First Faculty of Engineering split into Mining Department and Metallurgy Department.
1947 October Tokyo Imperial University renamed University of Tokyo .
1949 May University of Tokyo reorganized under the new educational system. Result: First Faculty of Engineering comprised Departments of Civil Engineering, Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, Precision Engineering, Naval Architecture, Electrical Engineering, Measurement Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Mining, Metallurgy, and Applied Chemistry. Institute of Industrial Science established with resources drawn from the Second Faculty of Engineering.
1951 February Branch School of the Faculty of Engineering established.
1951 March Second Faculty of Engineering discontinued. Petroleum Engineering Department discontinued.
1951 April Measurement Engineering Department renamed Department of Applied Physics.
1953 April Graduate Schools established under the new educational system ( School of Mathematics and Physics, and School of Chemistry ).
1954 March Branch School of the Faculty of Engineering discontinued.
1954 April Department of Aeronautics established.
1958 April Electronic Engineering Department established.
1959 April Synthetic Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Departments established.
1960 April Mechanical Engineering for Production and Nuclear Engineering Departments established. Applied Chemistry Department discontinued.
1961 April Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, Industrial Chemistry, and Fuel Engineering Departments established.
1962 April Urban Engineering Department established. Department of Applied Physics reorganized into Department of Mathematical Engineering and Instrumentation Physics.
1963 April Precision Engineering Department renamed Precision Mechanical Engineering Department. Applied Physics Department reorganized into Physics Engineering Department.
1964 April Mining Department renamed Mineral Development Engineering Department.
1965 April Graduate School of Engineering established ( School of Mathematics and Physics, and School of Chemistry discontinued).
1967 June Nuclear Engineering Research Laboratory established.
1971 April Fuel Engineering Department renamed Reaction Chemistry Department.
1972 April Information Engineering Department established in the Graduate School of Engineering.
1973 April Metallurgy Department renamed Metallurgical Engineering Department.
1975 April Faculty of Engineering began admitting graduates from technical junior colleges.
1976 April Metallurgical Engineering Department split into Metallurgical Engineering Department and Metal Materials Science Department.
1980 April Chemical Energy Engineering Department established in the Graduate School of Engineering.
1981 April Institute of Interdisciplinary Research established.
1988 March Institute of Interdisciplinary Research discontinued due to expiration of the specified term.
1989 April Department of Naval Architecture renamed Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering.
1990 April Superconductivity Department established in the Graduate School of Engineering. Metal Materials Science Department renamed Materials Science Department. Sponsored class, "Extremity Energy Engineering", established (April 1990 - March 1995)
1991 April Department of Information and Communication Engineering established. Department of Marine Engineering reorganized into Department of Mechano-Informatics. Sponsored courses, "Human-ware Engineering", "Intelligence Engineering", and "Earth Environment Engineering," established (April 1991 - March 1994)
1992 April Advanced Interdisciplinary Studies Department established in the Graduate School of Engineering. With more emphasis being placed on Graduate Schools, reinforcement of the Graduate School of Engineering began. (Consequently, seven departments were established in this first year of reform: Civil Engineering, Architecture, Urban Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering for Production, Precision Mechanical Engineering, and Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering.)
1992 October Sponsored courses, "Global Environmental Programs", and "Correlated Iron Manufacturing Systems", established (October 1992 - September 1995).
1993 April Department of Aeronautics renamed Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics. Department of Nuclear Engineering renamed Department of Quantum Engineering and Systems Science. With continued emphasis being placed on Graduate Schools, the Graduate School of Engineering was further reinforced. (Consequently, seven departments were added in this second year of reform: Mechano-Informatics, Aeronautics and Astronautics, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Physics Engineering, Mathematical Engineering and Instrumentation Physics, Quantum Engineering and Systems Science.
1994 April Department of Mineral Development Engineering renamed Department of Geosystem Engineering. The four departments of Industrial Chemistry, Synthetic Chemistry, Reaction Chemistry, and Chemical Engineering were reorganized into three new departments: Applied Chemistry, Chemical System Engineering, and Chemistry and Biotechnology. With continued emphasis being placed on Graduate Schools, the Graduate School of Engineering was further reinforced. (Consequently, six departments were added in this third year of reform: Earth Systems Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, Applied Chemistry, Chemical System Engineering, and Chemistry and Biotechnology. The latter three departments were created by reorganizing five departments: Industrial Chemistry, Synthetic Chemistry, Reaction Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, and Chemical Energy Engineering.) Sponsored courses, "Advanced Energy Engineering", "Autonomous Mechatronics", and "Earth Environment Engineering", established (April 1994 - March 1997)
1995 April Department of Information and Communication Engineering established in the Graduate School of Engineering. Visiting Professor Courses (which can be taken by students in any departments of the Graduate School of Engineering) instituted. As the final stage in the emphasis on Graduate Schools, the Graduate School of Engineering was further reinforced. (Consequently, three departments were added in this final year of reform: Information and Communication Engineering, Information Engineering, and Superconductivity.) Sponsored course, "Traffic System Engineering", established (April 1995 - March 1998) (H7.4 - H10.3)
1996 May Department of Social Infrastructure Engineering established in the Graduate School of Engineering (created by reforming and expanding the Department of Civil Engineering).
1997 April Sponsored courses, "Maintenance Engineering", "Extreme Environment Materials Structure Reliability Engineering", and "Earth Environment Engineering", established (April 1997 - March 2000) (H9. 4 - H12. 3)
1997 October Sponsored courses, "Atomic Energy Social Engineering" (October 1997 - September 2000), and "Iron Manufacturing Environment System Engineering" (October 1997 - March 2002), established.
1998 April Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering renamed Department of Environmental and Ocean Engineering.
2001 April Departments of Mechano-Informatics, Information and Communication Engineering, Mathematical Engineering and Instrumentation Physics, and Information Engineering classified under the School of Information Science and Engineering.
2002 April Departments of Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science merged into Department of Materials Engineering.
2004 April All National Universities transformed into National University Corporations, and The University of Tokyo was incorporated. Engineering Research Institute changed name to Institute of Enginering Innovation.
2005 June Department of Superconductivity abolished Department of Nuclear Engineering and Management, Nuclear Professional School established.Center for Innovation of Engineering Education established.
2006 July Department of Precision Engineering, Department of Bioengineering, Department of Technology management for Innovation established.
2008 April Frontier Research Center for Energy and Resources established. Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Systems and Department of Systems Innovation established.
2009 April Department of Mechanical Engineering established.
2010 April Photon Science Center established.
