I am Takao Someya, Dean of the School of Engineering.
On March 11th, ten years ago, a massive earthquake struck the eastern region of Japan. Many lives were lost in the huge tsunami, and extensive damage was caused by an unprecedented accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. I would like to express my deepest condolences to those who lost their lives in the Great East Japan Earthquake and my heartfelt sympathies to those affected by the disaster, including the evacuees.
Ten years later, while creative reconstructions are making steady progress, many people are still suffering from the damage left behind. In addition, at a time when social issues are being exposed by the spread of an infectious disease, we are at risk of large-scale complex disasters in which an earthquake, a strong typhoon caused by climate change, and an infectious disease occur simultaneously.
The School of Engineering is determined to continue our efforts toward restoring people’s lives to conditions before the earthquake and will carry on education and research to achieve safety and security in society, keeping our memories of the disaster.
