Keiichi Yano in the Department of Chemistry and Biotechnology, won a Young Scientist Poster Award in the 10th SPSJ Internatilnal Polymer Conference. This award was sent to young scientists who gave good poster presentations in the SPSJ International Polymer Conference (IPC2014).  This academic conference about polymer science is held once every two years.

<About awarded research>

A molecule bearing multiple hydrogen-bonding units is known to self-assemble into one-dimensional supramolecular polymers in solution. When their side chains bear stereogenic centers, supramolecular polymers with a one-handed helical geometry could result under appropriate conditions. It is known that we could obtain a one-handed helical polymer from monomers of optically antipodal mixtures or even from monomers without stereogenic centers upon mixing with a small amount of their chiral versions. This is recognized as a chiral amplification phenomenon in supramolecular polymerization. Our idea is to utilize helical supramolecular polymers as a functional chiral dopant for liquid crystalline (LC) materials. One of our expectations is that the cholesteric induction power of the dopant could be enhanced by helical supramolecular polymerization due to chiral amplification phenomena.
