On 13th April 2018, Shoichi Tokunaga (Postdoc), Department of Chemistry and Biotechnology, wins a CSJ Student Presentation Award 2018 in the 98th CSJ Annual Meeting.

This award was presented to doctoral students (at the time of presentation) who gave a distinguished presentation in the 98th CSJ Annual Meeting.

Cholesteric liquid crystals are known to reflect an incident light to exhibit vivid colors due to their inherent helical ordering induced by a chiral compound (chiral dopant). The reflection wavelength is determined by the concentration of the chiral dopant and its helical twisting power (HTP). Here we developed an unprecedented type of chiral dopant that could change its HTP depending on its oxidation state. By using this chiral dopant, we succeeded in tuning the reflection color of a cholesteric LC quickly (< 0.5 s) and reversibly by electrochemical transformation of the chiral dopant. Our material may pave the way for the development of reflective display without backlight.

It is my great honor to receive this poster award. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Prof. Dr. Takuzo Aida, Dr. Yoshimitsu Itoh and also our lab colleagues for all of their supports. I will devote myself to studying and deepening my research.
