Deans’ Forum Workshop on Resilience Engineering (November 30 - December 1, 2015)

Deans’ Forum Workshop on Resilience Engineering was held on November 30 and December 1, 2015 at the School of Engineering, The University of Tokyo. This was one of the workshops being held under the framework of Deans’ Forum. The first workshop of this series was held in 2012 at The University of Tokyo (UTokyo), the second one in 2013 at MINES ParisTech, while a related workshop was held on Nuclear Safety in March, 2015 at UC Berkeley. There were more than 50 participants including delegates from five Deans’ Forum partner universities, IBM Research Tokyo, faculty members, researchers, and students from UTokyo.

On the first day of the workshop, following the opening welcome remarks by Prof. Mamoru Mitsuishi, Dean of the School of Engineering, participants from the member institutions presented the current status of research and education activities in each institution. In the evening, a student posters session was held and Mr. Nils Goldbeck (Imperial College London) won the best poster award by vote.

On the second day, a group work session by IMDJ, which is a supporting method for group idea generation, was held for elaborating ideas related to Resilience Engineering. In the final session following this group work, the possibilities for future joint research and education on Resilience Engineering were discussed including funding application and a strategic approach to industries. Consequently, participants shared a common view that continuing this effort of Deans’ Forum Workshop is important for enhancing further synergy of member institutions.
