Report

A workshop for Tech Ambassadors was held online in the evening of June 27.

We welcomed Dr. Kaori Hayashi, Executive Vice President for International and Global Affairs, who gave a lecture on "The University of Tokyo from a Gender Perspective," which was followed by a dialogue between the audience and her.

The lecture began with an example that symbolized the University of Tokyo's long-standing gender gap: the absence of women in stone statues and bronze statues on campus (even Hachiko is a male dog), and the photos of past presidents displayed in the conference room of the main building, all of which were men. The lecture also explained the contents of the D&I Declaration that had just been issued, and asked students to keep in mind what they should do in such an environment.

The majority of the Tech Ambassadors attended the event, and they shared many questions and opinions: how to prepare for outreach activities, microaggressions that students experience on campus on a daily basis and how to improve them, and many other issues that students face on a daily basis. The discussion showed how important it is to be sensitive to the situations and backgrounds of others because it can be said that there are no right answers to these questions.
