About awarded research〉
As the world population ages rapidly, the prevalence of stroke disease steeply increases. Post-stroke patients exhibit distinct muscle activation features in sit-to-stand motion due to motor deficiency. Although muscle activation amplitude is a critical feature reflected in stroke rehabilitation, it has not been clarified due to the lack of a valid normalization method that enables intra- and inter-subject comparisons. This study, focusing on the paretic side, examines the change in muscle tension manifested in activation amplitude for a stroke patient in serial measurements by a novel joint torque-based method. With musculoskeletal modeling, incorporating inverse dynamics and forward dynamics simulation, muscle activation amplitude was solved and compared.
The proposed method successfully identified paretic muscles that experienced significant improvement in generating maximum tension after a 120-day rehabilitation training, offering new perspectives in developing effective rehabilitation strategies for future stroke survivors.
