【Awards and Commendations】Associate Professor Masahiro Nomura, Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Systems, received JSPS Prize

On 18th February 2020. Associate Professor Masahiro Nomura, Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Systems, received JSPS Prize

It is important to recognize and support young researchers with rich creativity and superlative research ability at an early stage in their careers to raise the level of scientific research in Japan to the world's highest standard. To sustain the zeal of such researchers while offering them support in advancing their work, the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science established the JSPS Prize.

About awarded research
Associate professor Nomura creates a novel concept and technology of advanced thermal conduction control in solid. His approach from photonics to phonon engineering is unique, and JSPS Prize was awarded to his research topic of “Heat flow control using phononic nanostructures and energy harvesting applications.” Heat transfer control using thermal phonon interference based on the wave nature of phonons, directional heat flow and heat focusing based on the ballisticity of phonons were proposed and demonstrated. The series of his research activity based on the background of photonics brings innovative heat flow control technology to phonon engineering and is highly evaluated in the field.

our impression & future plan
It is a great honor to receive this award. I deeply appreciate lab members, collaborators, all the researchers and staffs who supported the research activity. We continue to challenge new things for deeper fundamental research and useful application research.
