Fellow award ceremony, Prof. Kwang-Ting (Tim) Cheng

 

On May 23rd, 2018, Dean Okubo, School of Engineering, awarded Professor Kwang-Ting (Tim) Cheng, Dean of Engineering, Chair Professor of Electronic & Computer Engineering and Computer Science & Engineering, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

The title “Fellow, School of Engineering, The University of Tokyo” will be granted to persons who have their main base of activity at institutions abroad and who have carried out distinguished achievements in scholarship or education in the engineering field as well as meritorious service to the education or research at this school through exchanges with it and whose continued support via exchanges can be expected.

Prof. Cheng is a world authority in the field of VLSI testing and design verification, as well as an impactful contributor across a wide range of research areas including design automation of electronic and photonic systems, mobile computer vision, and learning based multimedia computing. He has published more than 400 technical papers, co-authored five books, held 12 US patents. He received 10+ Best Paper Awards from various IEEE and ACM conferences and journals. Prof. Cheng is a Fellow of IEEE, and he has been very active in providing professional services to the IEEE and to the academic community. Having served as the editor-in-chief of IEEE Design & Test of Computers, on the boards of Governors and IEEE Computer Society’s Publications Board, and on various technology advisory or working groups including the International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors (ITRS), Prof Cheng has been internationally known as an eminent member of the field.

Research collaboration with the University of Tokyo in VLSI testing for many years (from 2008 to present) including half-year of services in education and research guidance as a visiting professor at Advantest D2T research division in VDEC (2008/7-2008/12), with graduate school students of Electrical Engineering and Information System Department (EEIS), School of Engineering. Give lecture at Department of EEIS, School of Engineering, on “VLSI test”, in the fall semester of 2008. Periodic visits to the University of Tokyo for research meetings and lectures at VDEC D2T Symposia. 3 co-authored papers published, and 7 invited presentations at D2T symposium at D2T, VDEC, the University of Tokyo.
