Keiichi Yano (PhD student), Department of Chemistry and Biotechnology, wins a Poster Award in the 7th TOYOTA RIKEN International Workshop on Chirality in Soft Matter. This award was presented to students who gave a distinguished poster presentation in the 7th TOYOTA RIKEN International Workshop on Chirality in Soft Matter.

Disk-shaped molecules are prone to self-assemble into a columnar liquid crystal (LC) phase, which is a promising soft material to be utilized for electronics and memories. However, its slow response to applied external stimuli is a huge drawback for practical applications. Here, we succeeded in constructing a highly-responsive columnar LC from rod- and disk-shaped molecules. The resultant hybrid columnar LC showed rapid response to an applied electric-field. In addition, we achieved to reversibly switch the columnar orientation between two directions by changing the applied electric-field condition.

It is my great honor to receive this poster award. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Prof. Dr. Takuzo Aida and also our lab colleagues for all of their supports. I will devote myself to studying and deepening my research.
