On 10th November, Kensaku Matsunami(D3), Department of Chemical System Engineering, received The Young Investigator Researcher Award of the Division of Systems, Information and Simulation Technologies (SIS) at The Society of Chemical Engineers, Japan 51st Autumn Meeting.



About awarded research〉
While continuous manufacturing has been noticed as a new alternative in solid drug products, e.g., tablets, numerous challenges have existed.One big issue is the start-up, which is characteristic of continuous manufacturing, and the understanding of the start-up in the wet granulation has yet to be understood.This research analyzed statistically the relationship between process parameters and the start-up in continuous wet granulation based on the Design of Experiments. As a result, the influential parameters on the start-up were observed, and the start-up tendencies were different depending on the evaluation indicators, e.g., torque or granule size distribution.The results of this study will contribute to the rational process design because the effects of the start-up time on economic performance were analyzed.This research was performed by visiting Ghent University with the financial support of The New Pharmaceutical Technology and Engineering Foundation.

I am honored to receive this award and would like to thank everyone at Ghent University and the Hirao-Sugiyama Lab who has contributed to this work, especially Prof. De Beer, Prof. Nopens, and Prof. Sugiyama. I also would like to thank The New Pharmaceutical Technology and Engineering Foundation for the financial support of my stay at Ghent University. I will continue to work on the topic for extending the research.
