On 15Th December 2015, Dr. Hiromitsu FUJII, Department of Precision Engineering, wins a wins a Young Researcher’s Encouragement Award in the 16th SICE System Integration Division Annual Conference.

The award is provided to the five authors under 35 years old, who are rated high by the System Integration Division of the Society of Instrument and Control Engineers. In this award, the paper of 20th Robotics Symposia: “Improvement of Environmental Adaptivity for Defect Detection in Hammering Test” is honored.

Our study deals with an automation of social infrastructures inspection. We particularly focus on the hammering test which is a kind of acoustic diagnosis methods. In the awarded paper, we have worked upon the development of our diagnostic algorithm to detect defects by hammering sound. In particular, we proposed an additional learning method of the defect detector to calibrate against environmental noise of every inspection sites. The proposed method uses plural weak classifiers for diagnosis. Our algorithm can calibrate the whole detector by deforming the clean and defective signal models which belong to each learner. In the experiments using concrete test pieces, the performance of proposed method was verified.

It is my pleasure to have this honorable award. I am thankful to my supervisors, and all members of our research partners. Our research group intends to continue to develop the diagnosis system, hoping that our results will contribute to actual sites.
