On September 29–30, 2025, the 8th joint workshop with the Stockholm Trio—consisting of Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm University, and KTH Royal Institute of Technology—was held at UTokyo’s Hongo Campus. The workshop brought together approximately 180 participants, including 50 delegates from Sweden, reflecting the depth and vitality of the academic relationship.
The plenary session, titled “Turning Vision into Action: For a Healthy and Sustainable Society”, reflected on past collaborative efforts and emphasized the need for the Stockholm Trio–UTokyo partnership to evolve beyond traditional research cooperation and educational exchanges toward more structured and institutionalized initiatives. Discussions highlighted the expanding scope of international collaboration, the importance of responsible internationalization, experiences with joint research and funding, potential collaboration under Horizon Europe, and joint research platforms such as KI-LINK and the UTokyo–KTH Joint Lab. On the educational front, ideas were exchanged on joint initiatives such as double degree programs.
Following the plenary session, six thematic workshops were held, where researchers and students from the Stockholm Trio, UTokyo, and other institutions engaged in lively discussions.
On September 30, a session titled “EU Funding Landscape and Opportunities for Japanese Researchers” was held, where presenters introduced the structure of Horizon Europe, shared guidance on how Japanese researchers and institutions can participate, and offered practical advice on preparing proposals. This session served as a valuable starting point for future joint applications and thematic development, further strengthening EU–Japan research collaboration.
These events marked a new chapter in the Stockholm Trio–UTokyo partnership, setting the stage for deeper collaboration in international education and research.
