This award is given to inventive and outstanding researchers in the fields of environment, energy, bio, and life science based on polymer chemistry.

About awarded research

“Development of artificial vitreous and hemostat based on hydrogels with tuned swellability”

A hydrogel is a three-dimensional polymer network containing water as a solvent. It has a structure similar to that of living soft tissues. Due to such similarities, we expect to apply hydrogels as a biomaterial used in vivo. However, despite the high potential of hydrogels, the actual use cases of hydrogels in medical field are limited. Based on the hypothesis that one of the factors is the swellability of the hydrogels, we developed a non-swellable gels by precisely controlling the swellability of the hydrogels. We developed artificial vitreous and hemostatic agent using non-swellable gels.

Your impression & future plan

We would like to promote the social implementation of hydrogel in the medical field more vigorously than ever.
