On 9th September 2015, Mr. Jiheong Kang, Department of Chemistry and Biotechnology, wins a Poster Presentation Award, First Prize in 4th International Supramolecular System Symposium.

The helix is a ubiquitous motif in the biological systems at the macromolecular and supramolecular levels, as exemplified by the DNA double helix, and the alpha-helix of proteins.  The homochirality of their components, as exemplified by amino acid and sugar, results in the preferred one of the chiral forms of the helix and is largely responsible for their significant biological functions in living organisms.  Therefore, in polymer and supramolecular chemistry, the control of helicity is an emerging attractive field for our understanding of biological helicity and functions, and for the development of novel chiral materials as well.  In poster session, I presented how to realize right- and left-handed supramolecular helices with single chiral molecules.  By tailored chiral molecule design, either right or left-handed helix is selectively formed based on pathway selection for self-assembly.  Furthermore, they displayed chiral memory effect in solution phase.
