Japanese Language Class, School of Engineering Sumorikishies(Oguruma-beya) came to JLC

On June 3, the Japanese Language Class at the School of Engineering held an exchange between international students and sumo wrestlers to give students a chance to get acquainted with Japan’s national sport, sumo.

Two sumo wrestlers, Amakaze and Tsurugikaze, visited the JLC from Oguruma stable. They were accompanied by Okami-san, the stable master’s wife. This was their third time visiting the JLC. Amakaze weighs 200 kg and Tsurugikaze just turned twenty years old.

At the event, students asked many questions about sumo and the daily life of a sumo wrestler. Tsurugikaze showed the students how to stamp down dirt and perform matawari, an extreme leg-stretching exercise to increase flexibility in the inner thighs. Then, some students had a chance to have an arm wrestling match with sumo wrestler Amakaze. After the match, there was also a raffle to win a yukata, which Okami-san brought. All the people in the room laughed along with their performances throughout the event. We hope this experience will make more sumo fans all over the world.

Thank you to everyone at the Oguruma stable!
