【Awards and Commendations】 Yu Yanagisawa (Postdoctoral), Department of Chemistry and Biotechnology, earned President's Grand Prize (Category: Academics Achievement, Doctoral Students)

Presentation Ceremony for the University of Tokyo President's Award was held at Koshiba Hall on Tuesday, March 20, 2018. Yu Yanagisawa, Department Chemistry and Biotechnology, received President's Grand Prize (Category: Academic Achievement, Doctoral student) from President Gonokami.

President’s Award is given to excellent students who redound to the honor of the University of Tokyo by making their significant achievements in the category of academic, extracurricular, and social activities as a role model for other students.

Yu Yanagisawa has received it for the following achievement.
Functional Polymer Materials Based on Self-Assembly through Bent Hydrogen Bonding
To realize a sustainable society, biomimetic self-healing polymer  materials have attracted much attentions. Reported materials to date are usually soft and deformable, hence there was a preconception that mechanically robust polymers cannot heal without high-temperaturemelting. Yanagisawa, for the first time, developed a polymer glass that can be repaired by only compression without melting, revealing a design principle to achieve a mechanical robustness and an excellent healing ability simultaneously. This research was published in Science magazine and featured in more than 20 news media.
