On 12th July 2017, Koki Sano, Michihisa Ueda, Department of Chemistry and Biotechnology, wins a Best Poster Presentation Award at Chirality 2017 (ISCD-29). This award is given for outstanding poster presenters at Chirality 2017 (ISCD-29) .

Aromaticity is one of the most important concepts in chemistry, denoting why pi-conjugated rings are energetically stable. The energetic impact of aromaticity has been investigated in the electronic ground state since 80 years ago, while that in the electronic excited state has never been demonstrated because of the short lifetime of excited species. We focused on the chiral inversion behavior of a [4n]annulene derivative, and evaluated its activation enthalpies in the two electronic states. Through this research, the energetic impact of excited-state aromaticity was experimentally demonstrated for the first time.

I’m very honored to receive this award. I would like to thank Prof. Takuzo Aida and lab members.
