Title: Comparison of Two Methods to Find Optimal Energy-Saving Running Curve for an Electric Train

Research abstract:
The main purpose of this study is to decrease energy consumption of rolling stocks through enhancing a running pattern. When a running profile is redesigned, consequently, motor efficiency and regeneration are also changed, and for this reason, energy consumption is strongly affected. The energy consumption is analyzed by calculating speed profiles while considering these effects.
The mathematical optimization for speed profiles is one of the methods to minimize energy consumption. However, many inequality constraints should be considered, e.g. speed limitations, curves, and characteristics of rolling stocks, when optimal speed profiles are calculated for practical route. It is well known that inequality constraints are difficult to apply for optimization and also have strong effect on optimal results.
In this paper, dynamic and non-linear programming are used to calculate speed profiles. And both of two optimal results are compared and discussed leading to general ideas, such as optimal energy-saving running patterns.
