【Awards and Commendations】Assistant Professor Hiromitsu FUJII, Department of Precision Engineering, wins a IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (RAS) Japan Joint Chapter Young Award in the International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA).

On 18th May 2016, Assistant Professor Hiromitsu FUJII, Department of Precision Engineering, wins a IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (RAS) Japan Joint Chapter Young Award in the The International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA).

 

The International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA) is the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society's biggest conference and one of the leading international forums for robotics researchers. In this year, 2,357 papers were submitted, and the acceptance ratio was lowest recorded. IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (RAS) Japan Joint Chapter Young Award, which is supported from IEEE Japan Council since 2003, targets the Japanese students who are the ICRA presenter of that year. Novelty, usability, presentation and total count are items of evaluation. In this year, the five most outstanding students were commended.

 

 

 

Our study deals with an automation of social infrastructures inspection. We particularly focus on the hammering test which is a kind of acoustic diagnosis methods.
In the awarded paper, we proposed the diagnostic algorithm which not only can detect defects of the structure but also can estimate the material condition such as the depth of cracks. A probabilistic method to estimate the defect conditions was proposed, and an integration technique of plural classifiers to improve the inspection accuracy was also introduced. Furthermore, an inspection system that could decrease the influence of the mechanical running-noise was implemented. The estimation of material condition had not been achieved even by the conventional hammering test performed by skilled workers.< br /> In the experiment using concrete test pieces, it could be confirmed that our diagnostic method could accurately detect the defects and could successfully estimate depth of the cracks.

It is my pleasure to have this honorable award. I am thankful to my supervisors, and all members of our research partners. Our research group intends to continue to develop the diagnosis system, hoping that our results will contribute to actual sites.
