Yoshiki Shibuya, Department of Chemistry and Biotechnology, wins a CSJ Student Presentation Award 2016. An award presented to students who had a distinguished oral presentation in the 96th CSJ Annual Meeting.

<About awarded research>

Pyrene is a representative luminescent molecule, and has been applied to organic electronic devices such as organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs).
Especially the intrinsic blue luminescence from pyrene is attractive for the development of blue emitting OLEDs, which are falling behind that of red or green ones. However, due to its high tendency to aggregation, pyrene basically exhibits green excimer emission in the bulk.
Although blue emitting pyrene-based materials in the crystalline state have been developed by special molecular designs, there has been no example in the liquid crystalline state so far.
Here we report first pyrene-based liquid crystalline material that show blue color luminescence in the liquid crystalline state by utilizing a tweezers-like molecular motif.
