Dean’s Recent News

On May 20, 2019, Dean Okubo, School of Engineering, awarded Professor Seungwu Han, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Seoul National University, Korea.

The title “Fellow, School of Engineering, The University of Tokyo” will be granted to persons who have their main base of activity at institutions abroad and who have carried out distinguished achievements in scholarship or education in the engineering field as well as meritorious service to the education or research at this school through exchanges with it and whose continued support via exchanges can be expected.

Prof. Han has devoted himself to applying theoretical approaches to solving materials issues in various engineering fields, especially electronic devices. Using the high-throughput screening, he has suggested that cubic-BeO can be an ideal dielectrics. This work received significant attention among the semiconductor companies. Moreover, he together with experiment groups, revealed the working mechanism of resistance-switching memory, which had been elusive, This helped researchers to improve device characteristics. He has published more than 150 peer-reviewed scientific papers, with total citation of more than 9,000 times according to Google Scholar. He has been the Associate Editor in Science and Technology of Advanced Materials and Electronic Materials Letters, and was also a key contributor to Modelling and Simulation section of International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors (2013).

Prof. Han has participated in 12 workshops between department of Materials Engineering, The University of Tokyo and Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Seoul National University (including three-university workshops with Tsinghua University). Four times among them, he served as the host organizer. These activities lead to the student exchanges: He dispatched four graduate students to the University of Tokyo and accepted three University of Tokyo graduate students. One of the student exchanges lead to the joint research, which produced three journal papers. Furthermore, he gave several lectures for graduate students of the University of Tokyo. In particular, he built a course of SNU-UTokyo joint remote lecture together with a professor joint lecture in the series of SNU-UTokyo remote lecture courses.
