Department of Mechano-Informatics

The graduate school major in the Department of Mechano-Informatics is “Mechano-Informatics”, and as the name of this major indicates, education and research conducted on intelligence is an important pillar. That is to say that being aware of intelligence is not only analytical, but also that a more profound understanding can be implemented by its production. Examples include the pursuit of intelligence in developmental robotics as recognized by observing the behavior of a robot embedded with cognitive and developmental functions; neuroscience and brain-like information processing as the foundation of an organism’s intelligence; the pursuit of intelligence in embodiment cognitive science and robot intelligence as intelligence produced through interaction with the real world as interpreted by the physical body; and intelligent information as the extraction of beneficial information from the ocean of vast information. In addition to classroom learning such as robot intelligence, nerves and the brain, robot systems, pattern informatics, human interface and the like, students systematically understand the abovementioned subjects through exercises including robot behavior programming, real world recognition, and robot simulation computer graphics.

Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics

Information systems and intelligent systems play an indispensable role (1) as elements constituting aeronautics and astronautics systems (for example, sensor and actuator systems, control systems, intelligent robots and the like), (2) as systems for supervising aeronautics and astronautics systems (for example, flight management systems, air traffic control systems, artificial satellite operation systems and the like), and (3) as systems for designing and developing aeronautics and astronautics systems (intellectual design support systems, intelligent manufacturing support systems and the like). We are involved in a broad range of education and research from basic to applied.

Department of Precision Engineering

Based on the concept of intellectual machinery, which is one of the Department of Precision Engineering slogans, we aim to promote education and research related to making machines and systems that support mankind.

The curriculum is centered on mechanical engineering and mathematical sciences and is structured for the acquisition of a broad information engineering knowledge. Incorporating small group interactive project-based lectures are designed to foster the fundamental and practical skills required for designing the machines and systems mentioned above.

Regarding laboratory assignment in the fourth year of study, research conducted on service robotics, systems composed of sensors that detect the human condition, interfaces that simulate human sensory information, mobile robotics, microactuators and the like, realizes the implementation of globally unprecedented examples of intellectual machines.

Department of Information and Communication Engineering

ICT (information and communication technology), bringing computers closer to the people who use them – making computers smarter and more user friendly – is the main theme for the Department of Information and Communication Engineering.

The Department of Information and Communication Engineering offers the systematic study of both the hard and soft aspects of fundamental computing technology through user-friendly interface technology. As for the fundamentals of computational intelligence (machine learning, search, inference, speech recognition, natural language processing), architecture (high-performance calculation, brain models) and the like, lectures and practical training provide algorithm and programming basics. We look forward to the participation of those who want to support modern society, study the core information technology that sustains industrial growth, and serve society.

Department of Mathematical Engineering and Information Physics

Pursue ‘universal principles and methodology’! These are the basis of science and technology. This is the goal of the Department of Mathematical Engineering and Information Physics. Researching this ‘universal principles and methodology’ is indivisible from research in individual fields, and in the Department of Mathematical Engineering and Information Physics research in various fields is conducted along with researching the ‘universal principles and methodology’.

As for matters concerning “intelligence” we are, for example, involved in knowledge discovery from the analysis of vast data and developing prediction methods; research on creating brains with neuron integrated circuits and chaotic integrated circuits; research on image recognition, speech recognition as well as sound and music information processing; and the creation of intelligence systems that combine real time recognition methods and advanced control technology and the like. In the department curriculum, students acquire ‘universal principles and methodology’ basics in lectures, develop principles and methodologies through research for graduation, and engage in resolving practical issues.

Department of Chemical System Engineering

In the Department of Chemical System Engineering it is possible to analyze and control chemical phenomenon with scales from molecular to global in size, and with a focus on the systemization and design of these components, a chemical system engineering methodology can be acquired.

In this department, based on a chemical knowledge that includes reaction and separation, we are creating a methodology for plant control that uses statistical analysis methods to extract phenomena from operational data embedded in a chemical plant process system. Furthermore, through the analytical study of intelligence in the field of medical care and elucidating the implicit empirical knowledge and methodology existing therein, we are designing a more rational social system for medical care. In addition to providing a fundamental knowledge through lectures in the departmental curriculum and addressing actual issues through graduation research, we are engaged in resolving various issues.

Department of Systems Innovation

Ants also create societies, monkeys also make tools. However, only human intelligence has created new social systems from century to century and produced a variety of resources including earth resources, organization, knowledge, currency and the like. Business, science and politics . . . what is sought from leaders in every field is to conceive a new social organization from a variety of resources and interacting mechanisms, and an evolving intelligence continually redesigning new resources is what will realize that.

Now, 1.5 million years after the first fire was ignited, the Department of Systems Innovation aims to enhance the education of leaders on our evolving intelligent planet Earth through the study of various energy and environmental technologies, computer technology, social technology and the like.
